Why Herbal Remedies

Herbal treatments or remedies have been in existence for thousands of years and remain at the heart of today's modern medicine and the use of botanicals is well established in medical practice.

Statistics show that the active ingredients of more than twenty-five percent of all drugs used today are derived from herbs and plants of ancient times. With the advent of modern physics came the ability to chemically alter or influence our bodies to react to specific conditions and this became the focus of today's medical treatments.

While this style of health care can produce fast and effective "results" it can often disregard the holistic well-being of the patient. As an example, someone suffering from a digestive complaint which in turn causes acid reflux which manifests itself as heartburn may well be prescribed H2 blockers or proton pump inhibitors which curtail or restrict the production of stomach acid, thus minimising the effect of acid reflux.

We may have a result for this manifestation using this method, but do we have a cure for the digestive complaint? Herbalists will always try to treat conditions with a holistic approach. With the advent of modern physics came the ability to chemically alter or influence our bodies to react to specific conditions and this became the focus of today's medical treatments.

Thankfully, we are witnessing the meeting of minds as we see more and more GPs looking deeper into the holistic approach and consider herbal remedies more frequently in their prescribed treatments.
